ISBN Number

If you're a librarian, you may have just cringed. Why? What does ISBN stand for? C'mon, shout it out...INTERNATIONAL STANDARD BOOK NUMBER! So, to refer to it as 'ISBN Number' would be redundant. I hear it so often and it makes me cringe every time. So, to those of you in Library school and to one homicidal acquisitions assistant in particular, don't make this mistake! Seriously, is it a UCLA thing? I bet Joelle wouldn't say 'ISBN Number.' She goes to Simmons. Do I have to resort to electric shock treatment?

It's like saying "ATM machine". To avoid this confusion altogether... I call it a bank-in-a-box.

Or a PIN Number. Just call it a pin.

And ISBN? I pronounce it Izz-Binn, but that's from my bookstore days.

I also deplore the ATM machine, as Kelley said. I call it the money wall.
